What do you buy a geek?

It's quite a kick being a writer, because I get to spend my days pulling words together in my quiet home office with my dog at my feet, or at the kitchen table with the dog at my feet, or in the Starbucks while I'm slurping a tea and free Wi-Fi with the dog most definitely not at my feet.

And when the words are arranged just so, I send them off to some faraway place, where before long they get published in some pretty neat places.

It's magic. Every time. And it'll never get old.

Sometimes the words end up in a new place. Like this week, when Reader's Digest Canada published my work for the first time. The article, 10 Holiday Gifts For Tech Lovers, will hopefully ease the holiday-time angst many of us feel when we head to the mall. Until the utopian future of my dreams where this ridiculous year-end retail tradition is finally put to rest, I'll keep writing articles like this. I promise I won't show up at the Starbucks with the dog.

Enjoy the read.

InkCase i5 – The Revolutionary Case of iPhone 5 & 5S

Are you tired of the usual iPhone cases available in the market? Are you looking for a change? The long wait is over. The InkCase i5 is about to come. This is the brand new type of iPhone case, which will certainly blow your mind.

What Is InkCase i5?

InkCase i5 is the most controversial iPhone case of this generation. It is not just a simple case. It comes with a touch of technology that will surely make every single person say “WOW!” This case needs just a little more development in its app support in order to make the product ready and perfect.
What makes this case different from all the traditional iPhone cases being sold in the market these days? Well, this iPhone case comes with an e-ink display. This e-ink display is placed on the back case. It is designed for the purpose of using it as a secondary case of the phone. It is distributed by Oaxis and manufactured by Gajah International, a company that is based in Singapore.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog

InkCase i5 - The Revolutionary Case of iPhone 5 & 5SIt was Nate Hoffelder who had this case. Nate Hoffelder was the one who wrote a review of a similar case, which is specifically designed for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. This case was sent to him for him to write a review as well. Since Nate Hoffelder had no use for the InkCase i5, the version of the case intended for the use of iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s handsets, he decided to send it to The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), the site that relays information to the public regarding Apple products. The Unofficial Apple Weblog did not disappoint Nate and wrote a review regarding this case, which is not yet available in the market as of the moment.

The Components Required to Make the Case Work

In order to make this high-technology iPhone case work, there are three things that must be present. The first one is the low-power e-ink display. This is the component that shows text and images. The second component is the Bluetooth. This component is used in order to communicate with the smartphone device. Then lastly, there are the right apps. The app will be used in driving the first component. Though the InkCase i5 currently has apps, it is still lacking some apps. The lack of apps results to the case’ limited functionality. This is the very reason why the case is not yet ready to enter the market. However, if the case gets the apps it needs and everything is already fine, for sure, Oaxis won’t wait a single day to start distributing the case to potential wholesalers and retailers. This case will start the revolution of iPhone cases.

The sun sets on Sun Media

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
The headline, Sun Media announces 200 layoffs, is sad enough, but it's the bigger picture that's the real tragedy.

This is the company's third layoff announcement in 13 months. In November 2012, 500 people lost their jobs when production plants in Ottawa and Kingston were closed. Last July, they were at it again, this time shuttering 8 local newspapers and three commuter papers, and taking 360 people out in the process. What used to be an annual "tradition" has now become twice-yearly. And right before the holidays. Nice.

A little bit of disclosure: I used to write an op-ed column for the London Free Press, which is now owned by Sun Media, which is a unit of Quebecor. It was (and is) a paper that was (and still is) staffed by great, community-minded journalists who wanted (and still want) to make a difference. Freeps reporters often call me to comment on tech stories they're working on, and I very much enjoy working with all of them.

The problem is this: these days, thanks to decisions being made in corner offices far away, by people who have probably never had a byline, there are far fewer of them. And those who remain live under the Sword of Damocles, wondering if the next, inevitable round of cuts will finally catch up with them. In the meantime the product, starved of resources, gets thinner and less relevant with each passing day despite the near-heroic efforts of the employees who remain. How they continue to perform as they do amid the day-to-day gloom that pervades their environment is beyond me.

To be fair, Sun Media is hardly alone in this. Virtually every major Canadian media organization has announced recurring layoffs over the past year. Two years. Decade. Wherever you are, it's an ugly time to be in media these days thanks largely to a fundamental, Internet-driven shift in who consumes news, how we consume it, and who pays for it. Advertisers, once limited to the big 3 of newspaper, television and radio, are now able to get their message out on a growing range of increasingly interactive and engaging platforms. Real-time, online advertising tools allow incredibly granular visibility into spend, return and engagement.

The Internet, that miracle of modern technology, destroys existing businesses as it creates new ones. None of this is new. What is especially galling about Sun Media's method of navigating the current tumult, however, is its stubborn unwillingness to recognize that the world has changed. The chain's MO is simple: cut successive layers of fat out of the organization until there's no fat left. Proceed into muscle, and then finally bone. Keep using the usual corporate-ese doublespeak to convince everyone there's an actual strategy here. Repeat until there's nothing left to cut.

I'd like to direct your attention to the photo at the top of this entry. It is the chain's Twitter account. Notice a few small details:
  • They have never tweeted.
  • They follow no one.
  • They self-identify as "Canada's largest newspaper publisher."
It reminds me of an ostrich, its head buried deeply in the sand while the world churns around it. With this sad example of media myopia in mind, I feel compelled to share some advice with the powers-that-be back in Quebec:

Dudes, you're not in the newspaper business anymore. You're in the platform business. The online world is rewriting the rules that govern your industry, yet in the middle of endless "cost-cutting", you completely ignore the changes going on around you. The scenario would be comical if successive waves of dedicated and once-and-still-possibly-loyal employees weren't being economically lobotimized in the process.

Every other media organization in the country - and beyond - is being buffeted by the same forces you use as convenient excuses every time you sharpen the layoff knife. Every other media organization, except you, is investing heavily in alternative-delivery platforms so they can adapt to the new reality. Some will succeed, and most will fail. But they're at least giving it a shot, and trying to advance the state of the art in online, socially-engaged, mobile-fuelled communications and media.

Perhaps Julie Tremblay, your CEO, said it best in her statement released Wednesday: "It is very tough to announce job cuts. But as distressing as they are for the employees involved, these restructuring initiatives are necessary to maintain our leading position and ensure the corporation's sustainability."

On the assumption that anyone back at the mothership is listening, gutting your product in the hope that cost-cutting will "ensure the corporation's sustainability" is about as useful a strategy as closing your most profitable stores and hoping the band-aid you've stuffed into the gaping wound will be enough to keep you alive [cough, Sears, cough.]

It won't.

But as long as the spreadsheet jockeys are calling the shots, don't let my plaintive voice keep you from systematically dissolving what was once a great source of inspirational journalism. We all know you're not listening, anyway, but that's hardly material anymore: Canadians interested in media that matters are already disconnecting from the diluted product you insist on selling them. They're more than a little smarter than you seem to think they are.

22 Senators Dump PDP for APC in National Assembly

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The battle over which party will be in charge of the National Assembly is still on. It seems the APC has made it in the House of Reps, just waiting for the right time to make the announcement. Now the political power tussle has shifted to the senate where 22 senators elected on the platform of the PDP are said to be on their way to join the APC, thus increasing the chance of the leading opposition party.
“As we speak, those of us who have made up our minds to seek a new platform for our political future are not fewer than 22 in this Senate,” said a PDP senator who's set to join APC.
Although the National Chairman of the embattled PDP, Bamanga Tukur, had on Wednesday paid a visit to the Senate to beg the leadership to stop their members from joining APC, but it ended as a failed attempt.

One of the angry Senators thundered, as he walked out of the meeting with Tukur in Abuja:
“Tukur did not know how I contested and won my election; he will not also know how I will contest and win the next election,” adding that 2015 will be a big shocker for the PDP.
You may wish to know that PDP currently has 72 Senators, APC has 33, LP 3 and APGA 1. But with 22 of them now joining the APC, it means the APC will now have 55, will PDP will be left with just 50.
Also, a credible source disclosed that the APC now have a confirmed majority in the House of Reps. “The new arithmetic of the lawmakers in the House is 137 APC members plus 57 new PDP members that recently joined, making a total of 194 members.”

Elaborate funeral plans were set in motion in South Africa yesterday evening just hours after it was announced that the country’s revered first black president Nelson Mandela has died at age 95. The 12-day state memorial is expected to be an unparalleled event in South Africa’s history, drawing a plethora of foreign dignitaries of every stripe, members of royal houses and a long list of celebrities.
The preparations for the nearly two-week-long affair are expected to bring the country of 53million to a virtual standstill.

The sheer number of dignitaries, including numerous heads of state, is sure to spell a logistical nightmare for the South African government, which will be tasked with providing air-tight security during the solemn event.
In the next three or four days, Mandela's body will be taken to a military hospital, where it will be embalmed, CNN reported.
The public will have a chance to say goodbye to their beloved father figure during a memorial service at the Johannesburg soccer stadium that hosted the 2010 World Cup.
Following the memorial, Mandela’s remains will be placed in a glass-topped casket under a dome in Pretoria close to the spot where he was sworn in as South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994.

PDP Says Jonathan is Working, Fashola Should Learn from Him

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

We hope Governor Babatunde Fashola will not copy the part that a President has to watch ASUU strike to go on for about five months before stepping in and later he started issuing threats to the striking lecturers? The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has called on Governor Fashola to learn from their Oga at the top, President Goodluck Jonathan, especially in the area of development.
“Governance must be distinguished from partisan politics and we salute President Jonathan for practising this. We hope Fashola would learn such sincere governance from him.”
The party said this against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s approval of a $200m loan sought by the Lagos State Government.

The party, in a statement by its publicity secretary, Taofik Gani, read in part:
“In the opinion of the party, the Federal Government’s gestures to an opposition state government has further confirmed that the Jonathan-led PDP Government is indeed a government of development with human face and with clear direction, contrary to the impression being sponsored by the All Progressives Congress.

“Unlike Fashola and his council chairmen who are deliberately witch hunting our few councillors by denying their wards developmental projects, the PDP Federal Government has continually supported the Lagos State Government to develop. This is how progressive government is run."

The party also applauded the decision of the Federal Government to approve $1.3bn for the commencement of construction of a deep seaport at Lekki.

The PDP also claimed that many of the structures in Lagos were laid by the Federal Government.

Nigeria Must Resolve For Change ––Bola Tinubu

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

We do not pretend to have all the answers, but we love the people and seek their best welfare. That alone distinguishes us from the present lot in power. We know the kind of country we want to live in. We have given the present group too much time already. Now that we know their emptiness, we must work to be the part of change we want to see. Change will not come unless we work for it. We must build other bridges across political divides and re-align forces to gather a critical mass strong enough to push for change.
Nigeria today is an incomplete work, sometimes exhibiting more retreat than progress, more problems than solutions. Some people say we are doomed for failure. To them, I say their prophecy is the one sure thing doomed to fail. We have stumbled for long but very soon this nation shall stand as it should.
Let me therefore end with the memorable words of Edward Burke:
In order for evil to flourish, all that is required is for good men to do nothing. That is the reality of Nigeria today. Let’s all get up and do something for our country."

- A brief excerpt of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's speech at the Launch of

PDP Begs Amaechi, Others: We Can Settle and Work Together

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The Peoples Democratic Party is not giving up yet, despite loosing five of its governors to the APC in one say in an historic political merger. The party says Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who it frustrated with suspension and other forms of intimidation, is not gone yet. Now they want Amaechi and others back.Less than 24hours after PDP chairman, Bamanga Tukur told journalists at the National Assembly, after meeting with PDP Senators, that the governors are not gone yet, the party has released a statement:
“The fact remains that our elected and appointed officers, including our governors share the same ideals and principles with the administrators of the party and remain unflinchingly committed to the visions of the founding fathers.
“The PDP is not only a political party but a belief which cannot be easily jettisoned. It is a belief in national interest; a belief in the unity of the country and in satisfying the interests of the common man," said PDP through its publicity secretary in a statement on Thursday.
But reacting to Tukur and his hurriedly written statement, the five governors who left PDP said:
"Instead of facing the reality he is talking about people not leaving. The movement of people away from the PDP is not under his control, what is under his control is the level of impunity and brigandage that is within the party. He has powers to do that within the PDP.

“He has no powers to determine whether people leave the PDP or not. He can control the machinery of the PDP, but he cannot control the conscience of the people.”

Obasanjo ––What Mandela Told Me About Power

New Bluetooth 4.1 Comes With New Features

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Bluetooth has been around for a while and its still very much relevant. Most people would probably think that Bluetooth technology have remained the same since its inception into phones. However, the reverse is the case.

Bluetooth is constantly worked on and upgraded even more than most wireless sharing technology out there.

Presently, Bluetooth 4.0 is the norm in most new generation smartphones, however, that would change soon as Bluetooth 4.1 is ready to be unveiled.

Bluetooth 4.0 also known as BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) offered good connectivity and faster data transmission solution while reducing power usage compared to earlier version of Bluetooth technology.

Bluetooth 4.1 will further improved battery usage when in operation but the most important part to note about Bluetooth 4.1 is that according to the Bluetooth Special Interest Groups (SIG), Bluetooth 4.1 will entail the following;

  • Coexistence — engineered to work seamlessly and cooperatively with the latest generation cellular technologies like LTE. Bluetooth and LTE radios can communicate in order to ensure transmissions are coordinated and therefore reduce the possibility of near-band interference. The coordination between the two technologies happens automatically, while the consumer experiences the high quality they expect.
  • Better Connections — provides manufacturers with more control over creating and maintaining Bluetooth connections by making the reconnection time interval flexible and variable. This improves the consumer experience by allowing devices to reconnect automatically when they are in proximity of one another. The consumer can leave the room and upon returning, two recently used devices reconnect without user intervention.
  • Improved Data Transfer — Bluetooth Smart technology provides bulk data transfer. For example, through this new capability, sensors, which gathered data during a run, bike ride or swim, transfer that data more efficiently when the consumer returns home.
Technological improvement is emerging in all areas where its needed and one can only hope that the same advancement in technology would be extended to smartphone batteries in other to make them last even longer.

SPORT:Five reasons why Manchester United lost to Everton

David Moyes suffered another defeat (©GettyImages)There were so many sub-plots that surrounded Everton’s trip to Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Current United manager came up against his former team for the first time this season. The fact that Moyes tried to prise away two of his former players in a manner that was found to be derisory and disrespectful by Toffees manager Bill Kenwright was sure to make this fixture
all the more significant.
Lastly, Everton had not been able to muster a win at Old Trafford in the 11 years their ex-boss was at the club. 90 minutes later, what had been previously unthinkable happened.
Moyes had finally achieved it, but he did so while on the opposite dugout.
United succumbed to defeat for the first time since September in a result that sent shockwaves all around England and beyond. A bullish Everton left Old Trafford with all three points and with one up over their former boss.
Kenwright must have been gleaming with delight, as was the entirety of Merseyside, what with Liverpool winning as well. Moyes needs to go back to the drawing board before Newcastle turn up on Saturday and me being the nice guy that I am, will lend him a helping hand. Here are five reasons why United lost out on the night.
1. The absence of Robin van Persie
The mercurial Dutchman sat out yet another fixture since the victory at Arsenal, his groin and toe injuries taking longer than expected to heal.
RVP had been touted as being unhappy earlier in the season at his new manager’s rigorous and intense training sessions and subliminally alluded to that as being the reason for his fitness travails this campaign.
Van Persie, prior to Moyes’ arrival, had played 90 consecutive matches for United and Arsenal in the last two seasons but has only managed slightly over half of all United’s matches this campaign. Freakish coincidence? I think not.
With a World Cup on the horizon, Van Persie’s fitness assumes greater concern and importance. The Dutch national football association, KNVB, issued an enquiry after their all-time leading scorer pulled out of both matches over the course of the international break.
Netherlands drew both matches in his absence, just to put into perspective how integral the 30-year-old is to the team. At the moment, United are missing their attacking spearhead
a little bit more.
Wayne Rooney has assumed greater responsibility this term banging in the goals and providing the assists but he is like Batman without Robin, Starsky without Hutch - it’s just not the same.
United have a far greater win percentage when both of them play and it even increases when both score in the same match. United have dropped points in three of the games they have
played in the Dutchman’s absence.
Against Everton, his killer instinct, link up play and fear factor was sorely lacking for United. Welbeck is a willing runner but that’s it, he just runs. Chicharito has an eye for goal and is brilliant in the box, but came on a little too late and even then, United needed someone who
can hold the ball up against the brilliant pairing of Distin and Jagielka and bring the likes of Rooney and Kagawa into play.
Van the man needs to come back - and fast.
2. Antonio Valencia and the Kagawa factor
I already wrote on the Ecuadorian’s productivity, or lack thereof, for United so I will not dwell too much on that. However, what I will say is that he extended his ineptness attacking-wise to United’s backline as he was caught ball-watching for Oviedo’s late clincher.
Valencia had his positioning and posture all wrong in the build-up to the goal as he allowed
Oviedo to creep in behind him and tap in the winner.
Kagawa, who has been afforded an extended run in the side since van Persie’s injury lay-off, started the match in his favoured position but was shunted out wide to the left as the match wore on as Moyes looked to exploit Welbeck’s pace through the middle.
As a result, United lacked any threat through the centre as Gareth Barry and the outstanding James McCarthy were not seriously troubled on the night.
In addition, Evra was constantly left exposed on the left, Coleman and Mirallas and finally Deloufeu taking turns to run rings round the full-back who was repeatedly caught out of position. United were susceptible to wave after wave of attacks down that side of the pitch and
eventually conceded the goal after the build up took place on the inside left channel.
Moyes really needs to figure out how to protect the full-back while providing a threat down the left wing. United have scored the fewest goals from crosses this season than in any other season in the past decade. The bread and butter of their attacking play has not been so buttery of late and United are dropping points as a result.
3. The central midfield was overrun
The central midfield pairing of Giggs and Fellaini was dominated by the Barry-McCarthy axis for large spells of the match. It was hard to see any logic behind playing a 40-year-old with a burly midfielder who cannot do much running.
As a result, Everton had a lot more of the possession inside United’ s half and looked more composed and assured in the middle. Fellaini had a decent game but once again, looked a yard off the pace as Mirallas, McCarthy and Barkley breezed past him on many occasions.
His partner, despite the valiant effort, was stifled of time and space to dictate proceedings. Unlike against Leverkusen in Germany, Everton’s midfielders pressed United, hustling and harrying them into making mistakes and playing the ball back.
Giggs looked every day of his 40 years when surrounded by the youthful, energetic Barkley, Mirallas and McCarthy. United lost possession too many times in the middle of the park and Moyes must rue picking Fellaini over Cleverley or Giggs over even Anderson.
The Brazilian, especially, would have been perfect for this game yet for some reason Moyes keeps overlooking him.
4. Moyes’ substitutions
The United manager brought on wingers Nani and teenager Januzaj in an attempt to fuel United’s flat attacking play and offer more of a threat from the wide area.
The decision to haul off Rafael was in itself perplexing. The Brazilian had dealt considerably well, considering he had just returned from injury, with the threat of Mirallas and Oviedo, and even romped forward to deliver some teasing crosses.
His replacement, Antonio Valencia, who had been awful on the night, was moved to the back behind Januzaj and eventually was at fault for the goal that sunk United.
The Scot’s questionable substitutions cost his team points once again, much in the same winger he took off Rooney for Chris Smalling in the dying embers of the match against Southampton, only for the away side to equalise from a corner that was needlessly conceded by the defender.
Moyes needs to brush up on ‘substitutions 101’ or take a page from the Jose Mourinho hand book. The Portuguese seemingly always makes the perfect substitutions. Like over the weekend when withdrawing Essien during the break and introducing an extra forward in Demba Ba, who in turn completed the comeback against Southampton.
Moyes instead should have taken off Valencia for Januzaj/Nani and Fellaini for Cleverley or Anderson for Giggs, then Welbeck for Chicharito.
United, almost certainly, would have left Old Trafford with at least a point.
5. No consistency of the back four
David Moyes, much like his predecessor last season, has used multiple combinations for his backline and United are letting in goals like a church lets in people. The Scot needs to only look at his opponents for the night who have been defensively solid this season.
Martinez has stuck with the same back-four since the beginning of the campaign, only playing Oviedo at left-back because of the injury to Baines. The settled backline leads to better organization and solidity.
Jagielka and Distin have been so brilliant this season that it is easy to forget that the Frenchman is 35. They compliment each other perfectly, the former reads the game fantastically while the latter provides pace, muscle and guile. They are what United themselves used to have in Ferdinand and Vidic a not too long ago when they were in their prime.
Moyes needs to start blooding the younger defenders and develop a reliable partnership at the back. Evans, Smalling and Jones are all capable of forming United’s next great defensive duo and it is about time Moyes begins inculcating them into the role.
Rio and Vidic have been great and gallant servants but their time is up.
