The qualifying matches to produce those countries that will make it to the world cup has come and gone, and Africa alongside other continents now know the various countries who will be flying their flags at the mundial.
Nigeria, Cote’d ivoire, Cameron, Ghana and Algeria overcame Ethiopia, Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt and Burkina Faso respectively in the final qualifying round to book their spots in Brazil.
All these five teams fought really hard to make it to the world cup after a drilling qualification process which involved two stages. The first stage was in a group form where only the first-placed team made it to the next phase. In the second stage, the first-placed teams that made it were placed against each other which resulted into the teams, mentioned earlier.
However, the big question is, HOW FAR CAN AFRICA GO? It may interest you to know that no African team has ever made it to the semi-final of the competition. Senegal made it to the quarter-final in the Korea-Japan 2002 and Ghana also equaled that in South-Africa 2010. But can we go past the quarter-final this time? Nigeria, the current champions of Africa have a good team on ground coupled with a great bench led by Stephen Keshi. They played a friendly match against four time world champions Italy and it ended in a 2-all draw. The Super Eagles played the game with a couple of second string players and they really had a great game. A blend of youth and experience has made the team stand out on the continent, but whether they can take that to the world stage world is what remains to be seen. Cote’d ivoire is one of team in Africa that doesn’t need any introduction. With an array of stars, they can take the world by storm. But despite their good squad, they’ve failed to impress Ivoirians with their performances. They will have to show the world that they are not perennial under-achievers by at least making it to the quarter-final. They are always first in Africa on FIFA rankings but they’ve not always translated that on the pitch. Cameroon is also another country who needs no introduction and one thing that they have working for them is the experience in the team. They lives of Jean Makoun, Alex song and Samuel Eto’o have seen a lot on the football scene, and hopefully that can count for them. Ghana still have a large chunk of the team that made it to the quarter-final in the last world-cup and after the demolishing of Egypt in the last qualifying round, they might just be ready to stock the world again. The Kwesi Appiah led team has experience, unity and a blend youth in the squad. Algeria are the only North African side representing Africa, the flair by takes the team above other teams at African team to make it to the semi-final or who says that the World Cup can’t be won by an African country? The draws for next year’s world cup will be made on December 6 in Zurich by FIFA.
